LHC Welcomes Garrett Mortensen, MD, FACS, as Full-Time General Surgeon

Lafayette Hospital + Clinics (LHC) is pleased to announce that Garrett Mortensen, MD, FACS, joined the LHC team as a full-time general surgeon.

Dr. Mortensen earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and completed his residency and fellowship training at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. With over 9 years of clinical experience, he brings a strong surgical foundation. As a result, LHC will be able to provide a broader range of advanced and critical procedures, including abdominal, breast, trauma, and cancer surgeries. Dr. Mortensen also has a passion for alternative medicine, particularly nutrition and metabolic health.

“When Dr. Schmus, our General Surgeon, announced his retirement after many years of dedicated service, I was hopeful that we would quickly find another general surgeon that would like to practice in a rural community. With the addition of Dr. Mortensen, it ensures our patients will continue to have access to a highly qualified general surgeon while allowing them to receive expanded surgical care close to home,” shared Marie Wamsley, CEO.

Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Mortensen lives with his wife, Lauren, on Heartwood Farm—an experimental permaculture project that reflects their shared commitment to sustainability and hands-on learning. In his free time, he enjoys reading, hiking, playing board games and constantly learning.

We welcome Dr. Mortensen and look forward to the expertise and perspective he brings to LHC and the community.
